The assassination of Burhanuddin Rabbani in Afghanistan on September 20th in the long run it will prove far more damaging than the 20-hour rocket and grenade assault launched by insurgents a week ago on key sites in the capital of Kabul. The assassination greatly complicates Afghanistan's already tempestuous politics. Quite possibly it has shattered prospects for a negotiated settlement to Afghanistan's long-running internal conflict. Rabbani's murder has emboldened critics of President Hamid Karzai's peace policy. Some are starting to wonder aloud whether this single blast in a Kabul house might in due course herald another calamitous civil war.
