Isi artikelThe arrest of Yulia Tymoshenko, a former prime minister of Ukraine, on August 5th was predictable, but it still came as a nasty surprise. It was predictable not because of anything she had or had not done but because of the kind of man that Viktor Yanukovich, the president of Ukraine, is: thuggish, vengeful and guided by the codes of the underworld. The regime's persecution of Tymoshenko began almost immediately after she (narrowly) lost last year's presidential election. The formal reason for Tymoshenko's arrest last week was "contempt of court". In fact, most observers say, it was her contempt for Yanukovich and his men that put her behind bars. If found guilty, as seems likely, Tymoshenko faces up to ten years in prison. Yet by settling scores, Yanukovich may also have damaged his own cause. By locking up Tymoshenko before her trial was over, he has crossed a line.
