Isi artikel
More than a year before the election, the race to become America's next president has its first loser: Tim Pawlenty, the former governor of Minnesota, who withdrew his bid for the Republican nomination after finishing third in a straw poll of candidates in Ames, Iowa, on August 13th. It also has a new contender: Rick Perry, the governor of Texas, who threw his ten-gallon hat into the ring the same day. Although there are a dozen Republican candidates and a few others who still seem to be toying with running, attention is coalescing around just three: Michele Bachmann, the winner in Ames, Mitt Romney, the front-runner according to more scientific soundings, and Mr Perry, whose ten years as governor of the biggest red state convey instant credibility.
