Isi artikelThe usefulness of kinship terminology as a means to analyze family relationships is demonstrated. Analysis of data garnered from 250 college students indicates SUpp01'tfor the Schneider-Homans proposition that a wide variety of alternative parental kinship terms are in use in the American culture. Variation in terminology appears to occur along three dimensions: the social context in which the addressing takes place-casual, neutral, intimate, and conflict for address,. and intimate, semiformal, and formal for reference; the individual's subgroup identity-sex, religious, ethnic affiliation, etc.; and the degree of affection which an individual perceives his mother and/or father has for him. The variation in terminology indicates that some rather basic differences may exist among American families in parent-child relationships.
