Isi artikel
In a midwest study of 216 middle-class pairs, a reference-group hypothesis was tested and supported attempting to verify the relationship between peer-group association premaritally and relatively poorer adjustment post maritally. A structured questionnaire was used to collect basic data as well as information about premarital experiences. An adaptation of the Locke Marital Adjustment Scale was used to differentiate low adjustment pairs from high adjustment pairs. The peer-oriented couples scored lower in total adjustment scores, agreement, communication, and marital happiness, lending support to the hypothesis. A rationale for the hypothesis is provided and suggestions for further research noted.
