An interactional view of marital relations was described. Based on this, the hypothesis was advanced that an important variable related to marital stability is an awareness of the effects of one's own behavior on one's spouse. This hypothesis was tested by comparing 40 maritally stable with. 40 maritally unstable couples on interspouse sensitivity, using a scale devised by the author. Although both groups manifested significantly-greater-than-chance awareness, they were not significantly different from each other on this variable. The possible reasons behind this failure to support the hypothesis -were briefly discussed.
