Abstract
Background Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a disease caused by stomach acid that
rises to the esophagus which has symptoms such as burning and regurgitation. The prevalence of
GERD cases worldwide in adults are 11% - 38.8%. This study aims to determine whether there
is a relationship between GERD-Q scores and quality of life in patients at Atma Jaya Hospital.
Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out on 92 patients at Atma Jaya Hospital. The
questionnaires that are used in this study are GERD-Q and GERD-HRQL. Prior to this research,
a pilot-study was carried out in advance to validate the GERD-HRQL questionnaire in
Indonesian languange. Spearman analysis was used to find the relationship between GERD-Q
scores and quality of life in patients at Atma Jaya Hospital.
Results The results of this study indicate that the GERD-HRQL questionnaire has good validity
and reliability. The highest gender is women, which were 67 (72.8%). Women were more
affected than men. The highest level of education of respondents in this study was SMA / SMK,
which amounted to 33 (35.9%). The majority of research respondents were housewives,
amounting to 62 (67.4%). Respondents who did not work were 6 (6.5%) and those who worked
were 24 (26.1%). The marital status of respondents at Atma Jaya Hospital were the majority of
them are married, namely 91 (98.9%). The results of the Spearman correlation test showed a
strong correlation (r = 0.681) between the GERD-Q score and quality of life in patients at Atma
Jaya Hospital.
Conclusion There is a correlation between GERD-Q scores and quality of life in patients at
Atma Jaya Hospital.
