The current problem of low aspiration in socially disadvantaged children is related to the presence or absence of the father in the household. A matched sample of nuclear and mother-child mothers was interviewed to explore the effects of the mother's situation upon her orientation towards her six-year-old child's achievement. Among the mother's activities, interests, and hopes in relation to her child, the mother's concern about the child's future is found to be most closely related to differences in household structure.
