Isi artikel
This paper is designed to help bridge the gap between theoretical and empirical study of the family. It includes a model (Chart 1) of familial development in diagrammatic form which raises questions of terminology and seeks semantic clarification. The general theory of selective needs ("basic postulate") is presented in Chart II with extension to the concept of vicarious identification. A generalized model for testing hypotheses derived from the theory is presented and is illustrated by 20 derivative hypotheses. A method is suggested for testing a theory by predicting outcomes reported in case studies.
