Isi artikelThe 1960 census supplies data which make possible a comparison of white and nonwhite marriages holding three status variables-income, schooling, and occupation-"constant." Such a comparison for men in the 45-to-54 age bracket with respect to marital stability, defined as first marriages in which the wife was present, shows that the same kinds of forces are operating on both white and nonwhite men. For both white and nonwhite men, the proportion in stable marriages increases with income, schooling, and occupation. However, there is a disparity between white and nonwhite men, the proportion in stable marriages being higher among the white than among the nonwhite at all status levels. The disparity is greatest at the lowest levels and declines as status, as measured by the three variables, increases. Yet it is still present at the highest levels. Defects in the data and the incomparability of the variables explain some of the disparity, while cultural and social-psychological variables may also help to explain some.
