Isi artikelLiterature on maternal deprivation deals in part with institutional children. For this study hypotheses were formulated on the basis of social-psychological theory describing an institutional personality: specifically that inability to form reciprocal relationships, aggression, and apathy are inversely related to age at admission and directly related to length of stay in an institution. Data collected from residents of an institution for dependent children revealed a tendency toward the hypothesized personality variables in certain resident groups; however, there was no over-all conclusive support for the hypotheses.
