Although money is available for family research, the dearth of significant projects, lack of adequate theoretical formulations, scarcity of personnel, weaknesses in basic designs, and procedural problems related to participation of subjects are seen as significant impediments to sound research on the family. A symposium held at the 1963 annual meeting of the National Council on Family Relations considered these problems at some length, and the panel members' suggestions for reducing these weaknesses form the content of this paper.
