Isi artikelAnalysis of 58 families, each containing a disabled child, revealed that balanced and extreme reactions to this crisis were associated with two distinct family structures. The structures were characterized by either extensive or contracted networks of interaction and obligation, the former being found with balanced, the latter with extreme reactions. The extensity of the network, and hence the basic distinction between the two patterns, was primarily related to family size, with the large family-balanced reaction group, and the small family-extreme reaction group, having means of 4.4 and 2.0 children respectively. In addition, it appeared probable that these structures would largely determine family reaction in all other crisis situations. That is, an extensive network would be most functional in coping with all affective problems, while a contracted network would be more effective in meeting all instrumental difficulties.
