Isi artikelAvailable data suggest that changes since the 1930's in premarital sexual standards have been limited, even among the advantaged. Changes have resulted in a convergence on a norm of "permissiveness with affection" accompanied by a decline in the double standard. Because unwed parenthood threatens family status and honor among advantaged strata, the commitment to norms of chastity is lessened only to the extent that social arrangements permit the disassociation of premarital intercourse and illegitimate birth. Four social arrangements contributing to changes in sexual norms are discussed: contraception, abortion, adoption, and post pregnancy marriage. Within the next generation or two, it is probable that premarital intercourse will become normatively allowed among those who, in addition to being in love, have a commitment to marry. The normative solution reflects an adaption to permissiveness by the advantaged without threatening their superior social position. "Permissiveness with contraception" is another likely normative development when complete confidence in contraceptive techniques is gained-a change still several generations in the future.
