Isi artikelRacial composition is found to be an important determinant of the structure of social systems in three Northern urban high schools. Negro students entering a previously all white school enter first into activities involving a minimum of informal cross-race interaction and seek rewards in the formal system. They perceive that their efforts to be "good students" give little status amongt he students. As the proportion of Negro students in creases, two separate social systems emerge, with each race perceiving their activities as prestige-giving. When racial changeover is complete, Negro students "spread out" into all activities and behave much like white students in the white high school.
