Isi artikelAsuming that partial maintenance of a family's identity and the presentation of the family" to "others" involves information control and reduction of visibility, a survey was conducted to determine how the housewife controls and stages a "presentation of inner symbols" in the matter of hanging out the family wash. This research sought to determine (1) whether or not covert elements could be detected in clothesline patterns, and (2) attitudes and social characteristics of housewives and family related to the presence or absence of covertness in clothesline patterns. Data reveal a high frequency of covert clothesline patterns, such covertness being further evidenced bl attitudinal and behavioral "inconsistency" among housewives. The husband's occupational prestige\rating, home-ownership, and ownership of an indoor dryer do significantly distinguish among housewives with covert and noncovert clothesline patterns.
