Isi artikelKnowledge of grandfather's occupation was examined as an index of genealogical concern among various segments of American society. In a study population of 1,556 newly inducted soldiers, respondents were found to differ in their knowledge according to their education, their father's social class and occupation, their own mobility aspirations, and their parents' immigration status. These differences are interpreted as a reflection of basic orientations toward kindred which vary according to social status.
