Isi artikel
Thirty-five of 48 men studied prior to vasectomy completed follow-up Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventories and questionnaires between one and two years post operatively. While 34 of the 35 expressed satisfaction with the contraceptive procedure, seven reported decreased sexual functioning, and MMPI analyses indicated increased psychological disturbance in 15, with only two showing some improvement. Subjects revealing hypochrondrical tendencies preoperatively (on questionnaire and MMPI Scale 1) reacted more adversely to the procedure. This study suggests that subjects may defensively exaggerate postoperative satisfaction. A tentative hypothesis offered is that concern with somatic functioning and even slightly tenuous psychosexual identification may constitute vulnerability to adverse psychological reaction.
