Abstract
This study discussess language functions and speech acts in local English textbooks. Studies on language functions and speech acts in ELT materials have been conducted for years. Most of them indicate that the textbooks do not contain adequate pragmatic knowledge or information. Pragmatic knowledge includes language functions and speech acts. The present research attempts to examine the range of language functions and speech acts in three secondary school textbooks of English and to investigate how language functions are naturally realized in the lists of language expressions as well as in the conversations in the textbooks from sociopragmatic and pragmalinguistic perspectives. To examine the range of language functions and speech acts in the three local English textbooks, a text analysis was conducted and to investigate the realization of language functions in the textbooks, a pragmatic judgment task was employed by involving a native speaker of American English. Results of this study show that 40 language functions were covered in the three textbooks; however, 14 language functions discussed in the textbooks were not found in Blundell’s classification of language functions. The functions may have different labels from Blundell’s list of language functions and they might have been adjusted by the authors to suit Indonesian context. The textbooks also contain inadequate meta-pragmatic information. Regarding the range of speech acts, four categories of speech acts found in the textbooks were assertives, directives, expressives, and commissives. Declarative speech acts were not found in those three textbooks. A significant finding, which might be absent in previous research on the realization of language functions, was found through this study. Based on the results of pragmatic judgment task, most of the language expressions of language functions taught to the students are not realized naturally. Naturally in this context refers to “naturalness” which is related to formality and approriateness (sociopragmatics) and obscurity (pragmalinguistics). To conclude, the three local English textbooks did not contain adequate meta pragmatic information when representing the language functions and 14 language functions discussed in the textbooks were not found in Blundell’s classification of language functions. Declarative speech acts were the only type of speech acts not found in the textbooks. The language expressions were not naturally realized based on American English sociopragmatic and pragmalinguistic perspectives.
