Abstract
The quality of spot welding (nuggets) affected by welding variables such as current strength and time, therefore quality inspection is required using ultrasonic NDT. The objective of this experiment is to compare the methods of ultrasonic testing of contact method and water immersion method to predict the size of nuggets which is one of the factors that determine the quality of nuggets. In this experiment, spot welding using stainless steel plate 304 and carbon steel plate with thickness of each 3 mm. The results of the experiment showed specimens with 40 A and 30 s welding variables having the largest nugget diameter and the results of the tensile test showed the best strength while the specimens with the 30 A and 30 s variables had the smallest nugget diameter and the results of the tensile test showed the worst strength. The results can be read using two methods used but the water immersion method is more suitable to predict the quality of nuggets because the result (C-Scan) can more accurately depict the size of the nugget diameter.
