Abstract
In the past two decades, numerous studies were conducted to assess the aerodynamic effects of flexible wings for the development of Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs). An experimental study was conducted to explore the effects of flexibility on the aerodynamic performance of fixed wings at a Reynolds number of 50000. This experimental study on the effects of flexibility was done by varying the number and interval of chordwise veins. In an effort to understand the aerodynamic performance of flexible membrane wings, each wing model was tested using wind tunnel. The aerodynamics performance was assessed by measuring both lift and drag forces of the flexible membrane wings at various angle of attack. The force measurement results revealed that non-uniform intervals of the chordwise veins, that was closer to the root, benefited the wings aerodynamics performance significantly. The aerodynamics measurements showed that more veins at the root encouraged the formation of leading edge vortices that were useful to balance the aerodynamics loads on the wing upper and lower surfaces.
