Abstract
In this report, the effect of austempering time on the strength, ductility, hardness, and abrasive wear resistance of JIS FCD 700 is studied. Austempering is carried out at the temperature of 315 °C and treatment time of 19, 30, 50, and 77 minutes. The results indicate that the austempering time of 50 minutes produces the optimum strengths (tensile strength of1058 MPa and yield strength of859 MPa), ductility (4,08 %), hardness (37 HRC), and abrasive wear resistance (0,21 x 10-6 mm3/mm at 6,32 kg load). The results also show that the increase of tensile strength and yield strength occur as austempering time increases to 30 minutes, then both properties decrease as austempering process is carried out beyond 30 minutes. Ductility decreases at austempering time of 19 minutes, then increases as austempering is carried out to 30 minutes. Austempering process beyond 30 minutes results in further decrease of ductility. Hardness decreases as austempering time increases. Abrasive wear resistance tend to decrease as austempering time increases, but austempering time of 50 minutes results in increase of abrasive wear resistance. For future studies, it is suggested to utilize color etching for metallography in order to characterize the retained austentite phase.
