Abstract
This study aims to determine the effect of horizontal distance (stagger) betweentandemairfoil, as well as the thickness and camber of airfoilon the aerodynamic forces of flapping tandemairfoil.The 2D simulations are conducted using ANSYS Fluent. The flow is simulated at a Reynolds number of 100.000, and a Strouhal number of 0.2. The simulation results show that the most optimal stagger distance is generated by the distance 2,5-c. Although the thrust and lift forces generated by the stagger of 1-c is higher than 2.5-c, the total efficiency (=ratio of time-averaged thrust to input power) value of 2.5-c is higher than 1-c.For the study of thicknessvariations, it is found that an increase in thickness results in an increase in total efficiency. Therefore, the airfoil with the largest thickness of 30% is the most efficient in generating thrust. For the camber variations, the increase in camber results in the decrease in efficiency. Therefore, theairfoil with a symmetrical shape or 0% camber is the the most optimum.
