Abstract
The reduced availability of timber producers is a very serious problem for fishermen especially for the needs of new vessels and ship repair. This problem triggered the development of innovations that could provide an alternative to the use of basic materials to make ships. One of the alternative materials that can replace wood material is Glass-Fiber Reinforced Plastic (GFRP). This research discusses the design of optimum GFRP formula for ship body. The first step of the research is to determine the optimum matrix formula from the mechanical aspect as well as the economic aspect. The making of the formula is done by using variation of filler composition. Then the formula that has been determined is applied to the manufacture of ship body plate samples. The lamination process of the ship body liner sample is carried out using resin material, filler, woven roving (WR), binding tissue (BT), chopped strand mat (CSM) and catalyst. The samples are formed by material characterization test and outer force simulation that will occur on the ship to know the characteristics of the sample.
