Many believe that there is value in being self-governing in making one's own decisions about the direction and shape of one's life. Many, moreover, believe that self-government has intrinsic value that there is reason to want it for its own sake. Many are persuaded that even if you could relieve yourself of the burden of self-government, say, by letting someone else run your life for you, you would have reason not to do so even if, on the whole, you'd be better off if you did.
