Isi artikelUndeterred by the failure of the Segway, Dean Kamen is onstage with his next big production: a box that burns cow manure to purify water. Kamen spent a decade and $100 million developing the gyroscopically balanced transportation device (Credit Suisse and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers each injected $38 million), investing in factories that could churn out $480,000 units a year. He predicted it would crush everything from the golf cart to global warming, becoming to the car "what the car was to the horse and buggy". Yet when the much-hyped vehicle finally arrived in 2001, consumers took one look and dismissed it as a $3,000 glorified scooter. Eight years later cumulative sales sales juts passed 50,000 units. Its target customer is the mall cop.
