Isi artikel
Before the farewell dinner on the occasion of John Elliott’s retirement from his position as an Editor of Eductaional Action Research, the Editors interviewed him with the intention of publishing a transcription in this Special Issue. Since the Special Issue was intended as a surprise for John, he was told only that it would appear in ‘an’ issue of EAR. The Editors would like to thank John for the extensive work he subsequently undertook to edit the transcript in preparation for publication. The text has departed very little in content and spirit from the original interview and retains the energy and flow of the original spoken voice. It contains an account of Elliott’s early understandings, as a horticultural researcher and subsequently a teacher, of the relationship between research and practice, and how these developed into his evolving theory of action research throughout a long career starting with the Humanities Curriculum Project and the Ford Teaching Project (Ford-T) in the 1970s. Elliott then addresses critical moments in his experience as an action researcher when he has developed new understandings, focusing particularly on his international work, within Europe and more recently the Far East. He pays tribute to many friends and colleagues whose work has had an impact on his thinking over 40 years.
