Abstract
Boronizing was performed with various holding time at constant heating temperature, to investigate the change of mechanical properties Carbon Steel AISI 1043 at optimum holding time. Boronizing is a thermal diffusion of boron
into the surface layer of a Carbon Steel by thermochemical treatment. Boronizing was performed by powder pack method at 925°C for 4, 6 and 8 h. The phases that were formed on the substrate was found as Fe B and FeB layer that had sawtooth morphology. Metallographic and hardness tests conducted in this research were undertaken to investigate the consistency of the relationship between microstructure and hardness number to calculate the depth of hardening that
occurs. The result of this research, hardness of surface and depth of hardening strongly depend on holding time or duration of boron diffusion occurs into the surface layer of a Carbon Steel. The optimum holding time of boronized Carbon
Steel AISI 1043 was 6 h with the hardness of surface layer was over 1653.5 HV, while the hardness of untreated Carbon Steel AISI 1043 was about 372.4 HV. The depth of boride layer ranges from 65 to 139 µm.
