China Life's Yang Chao dreams of expanding beyond insurance and creating a full-blown financial powerhouse. First he must make some acquisitions. China Life is already the biggest insurance company in China. And with a market capitalization of $111 billion, it's also the world's most valuable life insurance company. But Chairman Yang Chao wants to make it much bigger. He sees China Life invading other finance sectors in China and expanding abroad. Indeed, his vision is no less than to transform China Life into China's first financial supermarket, anchored by its insurance businesses in life as well as property and annuities, and buttressed by an asset-management company, a bank, a brokerage firm, a national industry investment fund and certainly a private equity arm. When he's finished, China Life might look like HSBC but not as big.
