Many Malaysian construction companies have seen enough of the Middle East. Not Muhibbah. Now some of Malaysia's biggest construction outfits are running for the exits, but Muhibbah Engineering isn't one of them. Instead, the marine, civil and infrastructure-works specialist is pushing full-steam ahead. The Middle East accounts for $1 billion, or 30%, of its order book, only four years after it entered the region. It aims to boost that figure to 50% by 2011. Muhibbah has already borne the brunt of fluctuating construction costs. Work on two of its projects, a $150 million liquefied natural gas loading jetty in Yemen and the $55 million Damascus Airport extension, coincided with a sharp rise in prices. This led to cost overruns and pulled Muhibbah's net profit down nearly 70% last year to $6.3 million. Last year's revenue was $585 million, up 44%; K&N Kenanga Research expects the company's profit to rebound to $26.3 million this year, on a slight increase in revenue. With building prices now settling back to 2006 levels, analysts expect Muhibbah to make up some of its earlier losses on projects.
