This review recognises the problem of providing a systematic understanding of Language Awareness (LA). It looks at different perspectives on LA and elucidates the problems involved not only in defining this notion but also in understanding the principles behind the various terms used in the literature to refer to LA. Further clarification is provided through the proposal of a dynamic model of LA which facilitates discussion of different aspects of this multifarious notion. The consequent discussion focuses on different types of knowledge about language and also the sensitive issue of intervention. In the concluding part of the review, consideration of developments and controversies surrounding work on LA suggests the value of exploring the concept of genre awareness. A discussion of this concept points to both positive and negative aspects of genre study. It concludes with the comment that genre is an area of language study which can be productively explored by those working in the field of LA.
