Abstract
Background: Children who are severely underweight can undergo growth retardation, lowered cognitive function and immune system. Socioeconomic factors play a role in children’s health, especially their nutritional status. In addition, history of tuberculosis might also affect the nutritional status of children. Children with malnutrition are more susceptible to infectious diseases and vice versa.
Method: This research was an analytical cross-sectional study using secondary data of BCG vaccine cohort study which was conducted in Penjaringan and Tambora district primary health centers, especially taken from July 2017 to October 2017. Data permission was submitted to Public Health and Nutrition Department, then researcher requested required variables which will be analysed using Chi Square test.
Result: From all data that was successfully analyzed, 97 children and 95 mothers were obtained. In Penjaringan and Tambora District, 54.7% belonged to low-income
families, the percentage of mothers with a secondary level education was 50.5% and 91.6% of mothers were unemployed. Out of the 97 children, only 6.2% had positive tuberculosis contact history. Data analysis using Chi Square test showed that there was no correlation between maternal education (p = 0,816), maternal employment (p = 0,475), family income (p = 0,350) to nutritional status of under-fives and there is relationship between contact history of tuberculosis with nutritional status of children under-fives (p = 0,033).
Discussion: Out of all variables, there is a relation between contact history of tuberculosis with nutritional status, but there are no relationship between maternal
education, maternal employment and family income with nutritional status.
