Abstract
Background : In elderly there are various physiological changes one of them is the change in fat metabolism and cause hypertriglyceridemia. In addition, there are changes in body composition as well as decreased muscle mass caused by decreased protein contractile protein synthesis and increased intermuscular adipose tissue (IMAT). IMAT is triggered by an increase in age with decreased physical activity. The accumulation of IMAT causes a decrease in muscle strength. This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship of blood triglyceride levels with hand grip muscle strength in the elderly in PSTW Budi Mulia.
Method : This was a cross-sectional study involving 110 respondents. The data were collected by spreading the questionnaire, measuring the strength of the hand grip muscles with the handgrip dynamometer from Takei, and performing a venous puncture to measure the level of blood trilgiseride. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS computer program with Fisher-Exact (2-sided) test to examine the relationship of sex to muscle strength and test the relationship of blood triglyceride level to muscle strength. The Mann-Whitney test was also performed to examine the relation between age and muscle strength.
Results : In this study showed normal blood triglyceride level of 69.1%. The strength of the normal hand grip is 7.3%. The statistical test showed that age was associated with muscle strength with p = 0.041 (p <0.05), gender had significant relationship to muscle strength with p = 0.003 (p <0.05) and blood triglyceride level had no significant relationship to muscle strength hand grip with value p = 0.431 (p> 0.05).
Conclusion : There is no significant relationship between blood triglyceride levels and hand muscle strength of the elderly at PSTW Budi Mulia Jakarta.
