Abstract
Background. Tuberculosis (TB) still considered a global threat. A good evaluation is needed in developing country with limited facility. Intensive phase is anti tuberculosis drug (ATD) therapy on the first two month of treament. Success rate of ATD therapy in Indonesia is =85%. Increase in body mass index can be a marker for respond and successful therapy outcome of intensive phase of ATD.
Objective. Knowledge of the change of body mass index (BMI) after intensive phase of ATD in pulmonary TB patient at Atma Jaya Hospital.
Methods. Retrospective with pre- and –post design. The distribution test was performed with Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Data analysis with paired T test.
Results. In 100 pulmonary TB patients with the most gender is male (59%), age group 35-44 years (22%), with mean age of 43 years (SD = 9.88). There was a significant increase in BMI (p = 0.000) in post-intensive phase of anti tuberculosis therapy. Significant increases were found in underweight (p = 0.000) and normal (p = 0.005) categories. The limitation of the study are there is no analysis refarding factors affecting BMI, such as, chronic disease, occupation, smoking habit, daily food intake, physical activity, marriage status, and drug use. Extra-pulmonary TB didnt analyzed. Nutritional status evaluation using another marker and nutritional evaluation for geriatry should be considered.
Conclusion. There is an escalation in Body Mass Index in pulmonary tuberculosis patient after intensive phase of ATD theraphy at Atma Jaya Hospital.
