Abstract
Background: Acute appendicitis is the most common abdominal emergency that requires surgical treatment. Symptoms of appendicitis can resemble like other diseases that often miss-diagnosed with the incidence of 30%. Some additional laboratory tests such as C-Reactive Protein (CRP), Leukocyte Count, and Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) were developed to help diagnose patient with acute appendicitis.
Objectives: To determine which biomarker is the best at diagnosing patient with acute appendicitis.
Methods: This research was done retrospectively, using 52 patients with initial sign of abdominal pain in one of the hospital in West Jakarta in July 2016- July 2017. This research used medical record (Laboratory parameters like CRP, leukocyte count, and NLR) and result of pathology-anatomy to help determine patient with acute appendicitis. Determining the effectiveness of each biomarkers using sensitivity and specificity value.
Results: Result showed the average value of CRP, leukocyte count, and NLR in patient with appendicitis are 8,44 mg/dl, 14.700 cell/uL and 12,64. CRP has sensitivity and specificity of 62,5% and 53,6%. Leukocyte count has sensitivity of 50% and specificity of 60,7%. NLR showed sensitivity of 62,5% and specificity of 35,7%.
Conclusions: CRP is the best biomarker to help diagnose patient with acute appendicitis.
