Abstract
BACKGROUND Asthenopia is an eye fatigue or a feeling of tension in the eye. Symptoms of asthenopia can occur after excessive use of the eye, with the most common risk factor is the use of visual display units such as computer, laptop, tablets and smartphone. Asthenopia often occurs in young adults, especially college students. A study of Indonesian college students showed asthenopia prevalence of 69.7%. This can happen because of the changing lifestyle that cause dependency on visual display units in this modern era. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of asthenopia and to find a relationship between the duration of visual display unit use with astenopia and accommodation impairments.
METHOD This cross-sectional analytic study involved 95 respondents whom are faculty of medicine students at Atma Jaya Catholic University. Data collection was done by filling out a questionnaire containing some questions about the duration of vision and asthenopia symptoms. The data is processed by Chi-square test to find the relationship of each variable.
RESULT This study shows astenopia prevalence of 88.42% and there is no significant relationship between duration of visual display unit use with asthenopia and accommodation impairments (p = 0,643).
CONCLUSION There is no relationship between the duration of visual display unit use with asthenopia and accommodation impairments.
