Abstract
Background : The global use of social media is a naturally occuring phenomenon caused by modernization and this may impact human’s psychological development, such as self esteem. Self esteem has profoundlyinfluences human’s cognition, motivation, behavior and emotions. It also affects relationships among individuals and groups. Therefore, self esteem plays an important role in human life. Having low self-esteem is a risk of depression.
Methods : This cross-sectional study was conducted in December 2017 on 116 students selected by simple random sampling at Faculty of Medicine of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia (FKUAJ). The data reviewed are demographic including sex, social media users (Instagram), and self esteem scale. Self esteem scale was assessed by Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale (RSES) Questionnaire and the use of Instagram social media is measured by asking whether respondents use the Instagram application actively every day.
Result : The mean value of RSES of the active group using social media is 12.56 and the group that is not actively using social media is 21,98. The result of chi square test shows that there is association between social media usage and the level of self esteem (p = 0,000).
Conclusion : There is association between social media usage and level of self esteem
