Abstract
Background. The PAL program has started to be accepted in various curricula of health education, one of them is at Faculty of Medicine in Atma Jaya University. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of PAL on improving student’s knowledge and to know the factors that affect the effectiveness of PAL learning method.
Objectives. To know the effectiveness of PAL learning method and to analyze student opinion about PAL learning method as a method of learning at Faculty of Medicine of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia.
Methods. This is a descriptive analytic study with mixed method design, which is a quantitative approach using one group pre-test post-test design to 91 preclinical students of 2016 and a qualitative approach using Indepth Interview with 10 preclinical students of 2016. The quantitative data analyzing process uses descriptive analysis method and for the qualitative data uses thematic analysis method.
Results. There is a statisticaly meaningful increases between pre-test and post-test for iron deficiency anemia knowledge, with an increase 35.72 points of post-test scores, so it can be concluded that PAL learning method is effective in increasing student knowledge about iron deficiency anemia. There are also several factors that influence the PAL learning methods, which is peer tutor factors, student factors, group friends factors, and technical learning.
Conclusions. The PAL learning method is effective in increasing the students’ knowledge of iron deficiency anemia and factors that affect PAL learning methods are peer tutor factors, student factors, group friends factors, and technical learning.
