Abstract
Background: Acne vulgaris is a common skin disease among young adults. Beside drugs, herbs like Aloe vera gel can be used for acne therapy. Nutrients in A.vera gel
work as anti-inflammatory and anti-bacteria agent that can reduce acne vulgaris.
The purpose of this study is to see the effectiveness of A.vera gel on acne severity.
Method: This is an experimental study conducted on 37 preclinic students in Atma Jaya Faculty of Medicine. Subjects apply A.vera gel to the face topically twice daily
for 8 weeks. Acne severity is recorded every two weeks.
Result: Before using A.vera gel, 64,9% of the subjects have mild acne while 35,1% have moderate acne. There is an increase of subjects with mild acne (73,0%) and a
decrease in subjects with moderate acne (35,1%) after using A.vera gel. Acne severity before and after the use of A.vera gel is tested with Wilcoxon test and p = 0.083 is
obtained whereas inflammatory lesion before and after gel use is tested with t-paired test and p = 0.001 is obtained.
Conclusion: The use of A.vera gel is not effective in decreasing acne severity but is effective in decreasing inflammatory lesion.
