Abstract
BACKGROUND : Obesity and overweight is a worldwide nutritional problem that can endanger health and should be treated early on. Obese children are at high risk of becoming obese in adulthood. One simple way to prevent obesity and overweight in children is by exclusive breastfeeding. The leptin, adiponectin, resistin, and ghrelin hormones contained in breast milk may alter the programming of energy balance regulation in children. This study aims to determine the relationship of exclusive breastfeeding with obesity and overweight in children aged 2-5 years in Puskesmas Kecamatan Penjaringan, North Jakarta.

METHODS : The design of this study is cross-sectional. Data collection included anthropometry measurement of child and interviewing parents or guardian by using Riset Kesehatan Dasar (Riskesdas) 2010 questionnaire. The data analysis conducted in this research is univariate and bivariate analysis with computerization.

RESULTS : Exclusive breastfeeding had a significant association with obesity and overweight (p = 0.029: OR = 0.390). Age is a risk factor for obesity and overweight (p = 0.038: OR = 0.369). There is no significant association between gender with obesity and overweight (p = 0.511: OR = 0.716).

CONCLUSION : Exclusive breastfeeding is a protective factor against obesity and overweight. Toddlers (2- <3 years) are more at risk for obesity and overweight than preschoolers (3-5 years).
