Introduction : Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammation of pilosebaceous follicle characterized by comedones, papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts. Acne is estimated to affect 9.4% of the global population. AV can be caused by many factors, including cosmetic usage. The aim of this study is to prove whether there is a relation between cosmetic usage and AV severity. Methods : This study was conducted in 2017 using a cross-sectional design. Samples of this study (n=120) were active female students in School of Medicine, Indonesian Catholic University of Atma Jaya who enrolled at year 2014, 2015, and 2016. The severity of AV was determined by GAGS and the severity of cosmetic usage was determined by questionnaire. The data was collected primarily and analyzed using spearman correlation test with significance level of p<0,01. Result : The prevalence of AV was 100% with 73 respondent (60,8%) had mild severity. The prevalence of cosmetic usage was 100% with 49 respondents (40,8%) had non routine severity. There was a correlation between cosmetic usage and AV severity (p= 0,000). Conclusion : The correlation between cosmetics usage and AV severity was found statistically. The result showed 33 respondents (27,5%) believe that they had AV that is exacerbated by the use of cosmetic. The most likely cosmetic product to cause AV is foundation (84,8%). |
