We welcome this opportunity to respond to the commentaries of Lichtenberg (2010) and Lexchin (2010) on our paper "Methuselah's Medicine: Pharmaceutical Innovation and Mortality in the United States, 1960-2000" (Schnittker & Karandinos, 2010). We will structure the reply primarily in light of Lichtenberg's comments, but in the process will address those of Lexchin as well. As a prefatory note, however, we will note that we agree with many of the points raised by Lexchin, as we will try to make clear.
