Many analyses of racial and ethnic differences involve adjusting between-group differences for a range of other factors associated with the outcomes and race or ethnicity (e.g., poverty). Researchers then compare adjusted means for the outcomes of interest. The motives for doing so are two-fold. First, one often wants to know what factors account for racial differences and whether the difference can be explained by other factors, such as education. The idea is that if race differences can be accounted for by other factors, then public policy might better target those factors, benefiting all racial groups. If including poverty, for example, reduces racial differences, then perhaps public policy should revolve around anti-poverty programs rather than address racial differences per se.
