Abstract
Background: E-learning and the need to find information practically as well as dissatisfaction with the reality of life make students vulnerable to internet and online gaming addiction. Internet and online gaming addiction are often comorbidities with insomnia, anxiety, and depression.
Objectives: To obtains the result of validity and reliability test’s questionnaire about internet and online gaming addiction and prevalence and association of internet and online gaming addiction with its comorbidities among FKUAJ preclinical students batch 2014-2017.
Methods: This research is cross-sectional for the 715 FKUAJ preclinical students batch 2014-2017. The instruments in this research are questionnaires (demographic, Internet Addiction Test, Game Addiction Scale, Insomnia Severity Index, Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety, and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression). Data analytics are univariate and bivariate.
Result: The result of Internet Addiction Test and Game Addiction Scale validity and reliability test are valid (r>0.3) and reliable (Cronbach’s Alpha 0.887 and 0.908). There are 20.6% adolescents with internet addiction and 1.5% online game addiction. Internet addiction comorbidities are 27.6% insomnia, 38.4% anxiety, and 28.7% depression. Online gaming addiction comorbidities are 2.2% insomnia, 2.5% anxiety, and 1.5% depression. Statistical analysis showed a significant association (p<0.01) between internet addiction with insomnia, anxiety, and depression.
Conclusions: Mental comorbidities (insomnia, anxiety, and depression) can influence internet addiction.
