Abstract
Introduction: In the elderly there is a functional decline of the body, one of which is the decrease of body cell sensitivity to insulin and decreased pancreatic work that associated with diabetes mellitus. To improve the quality of life of the elderly, the state of diabetes mellitus must be prevented and detected from the beginning. Methods to detect the existing state of diabetes mellitus have high sensitivity and specificity, but are classified as invasive and require special equipment, so it is necessary to find other detection methods that are easy to use and have high sensitivity as well. Measurement of the circumference of the neck and waist circumference can be an alternative method that has high sensitivity, but not many studies in Indonesia that examine it, therefore this study will see whether there is a relationship between the circumference of the neck and waist circumference with fasting blood sugar in the elderly
Methodology: The study was an analytic study with cross sectional design. The data were collected using 175 subjects aged 60 and above in the nursing home. Fasting blood sugar is measured after 8 hours of fasting using GOD PAP enzymatic methods. The circumference of the neck and waist circumference is measured using a tape measure. SPSS version 22 is used for data analysis
Results: 13.7% of individuals had neck circumference more than normal values, 38.5% of individuals had waist circumference exceeding normal values, 38.5% of individuals were overweight, and 13.7% of individuals had high fasting blood sugar. The mean fasting blood sugar in women (104.41 ± 10.22 mg / dL) was higher than men (91.51 ± 5.35 mg / dL), mean waist circumference in women (80.79 ± 12.9 cm) higher than men (78.18 ± 5.3 cm) and body mass index in women (22.27 ± 4.73 cm) greater than in men (20.72 ± 3.18 cm). Based on Chi-square test there is no relationship between neck circumference with fasting blood sugar, waist circumference with fasting blood sugar, and body mass index with fasting blood sugar
Conclusion: There is no relationship between the size of the neck circumference and waist circumference with fasting blood sugar
