Abstract
Fish mortality is the main problem encountered by Indonesian exporter that lowered the value and market share, instead of the potency and export volume. The mortality of fish is mainly caused by bad acclimatization. Acclimatization techniques are still limited to conventional technique which can cause stress on fish due to drastic change in acidity (pH), or drip-line technique which is less effective when applied to weak fish. In this study, acclimatization was carried out with acid clean seawater (pH adjusted to level of packing water) called “low pH adjustement”. In fact, the low pH shift the equilibrium of nitrogen (N) compounds to ammonium form (NH4) and avoid the formation of toxic NH3 non ionized. This technique was compared to drip-line and conventional techniques using 4 species (Centropyge eibli, Neoglyphidodon melas, Crytocentrus cinctus and Labroides dimidiatus). Fish endurance was measured by addition of insecticide containing toxic compound chlorpyrifos. Acclimatization with low pH adjustment successfully increased the endurance rate of fish by 17.4% compared to conventional technique. Although it is not significantly different from drip-line, low pH method is still better as it results no fish mortality and it is also easy to operate.Benthic and slow moving fishes showed higher endurance.
