Abstract
BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis is a global public health problem. One of the causes is the increase in oxidative stress, resulting in reduction of osteocytes numbers and decreased bone density. Blueberries is an antioxidant which plays a role in bone protection. This study aims to determine the effect of blueberry extract consumption on the prevention of osteoporosis histologically, which is observed through the increasing number of osteocytes in femoral bone of male C57BL mice.
METHODS: This study used 12 male C57BL mice and were divided into 2 groups, control and treatment. The treatment group received blueberry extract by oral gavage. This study was carried out for 3 months, and then the samples of the femoral bone were taken. Afterward the samples were decalcified, processed, and stained. All sections were observed using a light microscope with 400× magnification and the osteocytes were counted in 20 randomly chosen fields.
RESULTS: The mean osteocytes of the treatment group is greater than the control group. Results of data processing and analysis shows p value is less than 0.05 in paired T test, which means there is a significant difference in mean osteocytes between two groups statistically.
CONCLUSIONS: Blueberry extract consumption increased the number of osteocytes in femoral bone of male C57BL mice.
