Abstract
Background: Diabetic Mellitus (DM) is a clinical syndrome of metabolic abnormalities, characterized by the presence of hyperglycemia caused by insulin defects. DM is one of the predisposing factors in nail infections. In type 2 diabetic mellitus patient, the incidence of nail abnormalities increased to 2.5 times. Percentage of occurrence of nail abnormalities 18-40% is onychomycosis. There have been no studies on the prevalence of nail abnormalities in DM patients in Indonesia. Therefore, this research intends to determine the prevalence of nail abnormalities in type 2 diabetic mellitus patient in Atma Jaya Hospital 2016/2017.
Methods: This research is a descriptive analytic study with a cross-sectional approach on 70 respondents who are type 2 DM patients in Inpatient Room Atma Jaya Hospital in 2016 / 2017. The research data were taken from medical record and physical examination conducted by team of Atma Jaya Hospital dermatologist. The data were analyzed by Chi Square test with 95% significance and P <0.05.
Result: From 70 respondents, prevalance of nail abnormalities in this study was 24,3%. Gender, age, and HbA1c levels had no significant effect on nail abnormalities (p>0.05).
Conclusion: This study shows that the prevalence of nail abnormalities in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus is not high and there is no significant effect between sex, age, and HbA1c levels with nail abnormalities.
