Isi artikelFifteen 4-month-old infants were videotaped for 15 minutes of free play with their adolescent mothers and another 15 minutes with their fathers. Comparisons using paired t tests were made between mothers and fathers on type of play, and parental sensitivity and reciprocity. Findings indicate that fathers' type of play is very similar to mothers with the exception that fathers engage in more social play. However, fathers are found to be less sensitive than mothers to their infants' communications for they often missed cues, or responded slowly or inappropriately to the infant's signals. Fathers also tended to demonstrate less reciprocity in the interactions. These findings emphasize a need for parent educators to teach young fathers how to understand and respond to their children.
