We have read the article "Racial and socioeconomic disparities in arterial stiffness and intima media thickness among adolescents," by Thurston and Matthews recently published in Social Science & Medicine (Thurston & Matthews, 2009). This is an incresingly important area of research and the findings are of research and clinical interest. The correlations of arterial stiffness with socioeconomic status that they have demonstrated are intriguing. We feel there were a few points regarding arterial stiffness within the article which should be clarified though.
